The Owl Butterfly - Photo by Meredith Eastwood

The Owl Butterfly is very large (2.6-7.9 in). This is one of 21 in the Calico Species.

It is difficult to spot in a tropical rain forest due to its camouflage because it sits with its wings closed, the eye images and coloring functioning as decoys against predators. However, when it opens up fully and flies, one can see the upper sides of the wings, a lovely shade of blue that shines brightly under the safety of the sunlight.

I rather liked this butterfly.
